A local Medicare agent, on your side
Medicare Agent in My Area: Medicare Brokers in My Area
You searched for a Medicare agent near you, and that search usually means one thing: you want a real person, nearby, who will give you a straight answer. That is exactly what I do. My name is Lourdes Hernandez, and I help people in Florida, New Jersey, and North Carolina with Medicare, at no charge to you.
Why Search for a Medicare Agent in My Area?
Medicare is not a one size fits all decision, and it is not something you should have to sort through by reading brochures alone. The plans available to you depend on your county, your doctors, your prescriptions, and your health, and those details change from one year to the next. A local agent who works in your area knows which plans have good networks in your town, which pharmacies are in the preferred list, and which carriers handle claims without making people chase them.
There is also a practical reason to work with someone local. When a problem comes up, and sometimes it does, you want someone you can call who will pick up the phone and fix it with you, not a 1-800 number that puts you on hold. I have helped clients resolve billing disputes, coverage gaps, and enrollment errors that would have taken them weeks to untangle on their own. That is what a local relationship buys you.
It costs you nothing to work with me. I am paid by the insurance carrier, not by you, so your premium is the same whether you enroll through me or on your own. That is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon comparing plans by yourself.
Medicare Brokers in My Area vs. Captive Agents
There is a difference worth understanding before you choose who to work with. A captive agent works for one specific insurance company, and can only show you that company's plans. An independent agent, sometimes called a broker, works with several carriers, and can lay their plans side by side so you see the differences yourself.
That difference matters more than most people expect. Two plans can look nearly identical in a brochure and behave very differently once you use them, especially when it comes to which doctors are in network, which drugs are covered cheaply, and how the plan handles appeals. When I sit with a client, I am not steering them toward a single company's product. I am showing them what is actually available in their zip code and letting them choose. If a client's ideal option is a plan I do not carry, I tell them so and point them in the right direction.
I am an independent agent licensed in Florida, New Jersey, and North Carolina. I work with a range of carriers, and I will tell you plainly what each one does well and where it falls short. That honesty is the whole reason people keep coming back, and why they send their neighbors to me.
Counties and Communities LYS Insurance Agency Serves
In Florida, I serve Palm Beach County, including West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach, and Broward County, including Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, and Sunrise. Medicare Advantage plans vary by county, so the plans available in Palm Beach County differ from those in Broward County, even a few miles apart. I keep track of which carriers are active where, so we do not waste time on plans you cannot actually buy.
In New Jersey, I work with clients in Ocean County, particularly Toms River and Brick, and I am also licensed in North Carolina for anyone with family there. If you are sorting Medicare at the same time as other decisions, I cover the cost side of coverage in depth on my page about what Medicare Plan G costs in 2026 and how it compares to Advantage plans in Florida. If you are not sure whether Medicare costs you anything at all to begin with, that question comes up often enough that I wrote a separate page answering whether Medicare costs money in plain terms.
Wherever you are in those three states, the process works the same. We talk by phone, by video, or in person, whichever suits you. I ask about your doctors, your medications, and what matters most to you, and then I show you the plans that fit rather than the plans that are being pushed hardest.
English and Spanish Medicare Help Near You
Se habla español. If you are more comfortable speaking Spanish, we can do the whole conversation in Spanish, from the first phone call to the moment you enroll. If you would rather switch between the two, that works too. Medicare paperwork is confusing enough without a language barrier on top of it, and I do not want that to be the reason you end up in a plan that does not fit.
I also help adult children who are trying to sort this out for a parent, sometimes from a different state entirely. That is common in my area, where families span Palm Beach County, Broward County, and points north. If your mother is in Toms River and you are in Fort Lauderdale, we can set up a call with both of you on the line, or separate calls if that is easier. The person enrolling needs to be part of the conversation, but everyone who cares about the decision is welcome to listen.
What to Bring to Your Medicare Agent Appointment
You do not need to prepare much, but a few things make the conversation more useful. Have your Medicare card handy, or your Social Security number if you have not enrolled yet. Bring a list of your current prescriptions, with the dosages if you can, because drug coverage is one of the biggest differences between plans. Write down the names of the doctors you want to keep seeing, including any specialists.
If you have coverage through an employer, yours or your spouse's, tell me about that, because it affects whether Medicare should be primary and whether you need to enroll at all right now. If you have a plan you are unhappy with, bring the paperwork from it. None of this needs to be organized beautifully; a stack of envelopes is fine. We will sort through it together.
Most appointments take fifteen to thirty minutes, and they end with you knowing more than you did, whether or not you change anything. If you are turning 65 soon, your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your birthday, and the Medigap open enrollment window runs for six months once you enroll in Part B. If you are already in an Advantage plan, the annual window runs October 15 through December 7, and the Advantage switch window runs January 1 through March 31.
Common questions
How much does it cost to work with a Medicare agent?
Nothing. My help is free to you. I am compensated by the insurance carrier when you enroll in a plan, and your premium is exactly the same whether you enroll through me or on your own. If you decide not to enroll in anything, I still answer your questions, and there is never a bill.
What is the difference between an agent and a broker?
In practice the terms overlap, but the meaningful distinction is captive versus independent. A captive agent represents one insurance company and can only show you that company's plans. An independent agent, like me, works with several carriers, so you can compare real options side by side instead of being steered toward one.
Can a Medicare agent help me outside open enrollment?
Often, yes. There are special enrollment periods for situations like moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for certain programs, and there are narrow windows such as the January 1 through March 31 Advantage switch period. If something in your life has changed, call me and I will tell you whether you qualify rather than assume you have to wait.
Do I have to enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?
It depends on whether you have other coverage, such as through an employer. If you do, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. If you do not, waiting past your Initial Enrollment Period can mean paying more for Part B for the rest of your life. This is one of the questions I am asked most, and it is worth a short phone call to get it right.
Can you help my parents if I live in a different state?
Yes. I am licensed in Florida, New Jersey, and North Carolina, so I can work with your parents wherever they are in those three states, and with you on the same call from anywhere. We can do it together or separately, whatever is more comfortable for your family.
What if I already have a Medicare plan I am unhappy with?
Call me anyway. I will look at your current plan, tell you what is causing the problem, and show you whether a different plan would fix it. If the window to change is closed, I will explain when the next one opens and what to watch for in the meantime. You are not stuck just because you enrolled somewhere already.
